The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
